Review AI visibility separately from other site performance signals.
Gizmodo reported that Google’s search advertising business generated $63.4 billion in the third quarter of 2026, up 12% year over year.
What Changed in Google’s Search Revenue
According to Gizmodo, Philipp Schindler, chief business officer at Google, said the AI-generated responses that Google now overwhelmingly serves to users whenever they search for anything have made it more difficult for Google to monetize results, cutting into its usually extremely profitable advertising business and contributing to the company missing its revenue projections in its latest earnings call.
Gizmodo reported that Google’s shares fell as much as 13% after the quarterly report, with a market-value loss of more than $500 billion. Per the Financial Times, Google’s capital expenditure jumped from $44.9 billion in the second quarter to $51.3 billion in Q3.
Google Is Expanding Ads Inside AI Mode
Google announced on October 28 that it was scaling ads in AI Mode in Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Singapore.
Google said queries in AI Mode are, on average, three times longer than traditional searches. Its US internal data from August 20 through September 3, 2026 found that click-through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode. Google also said it was launching multiturn ads in the United States, with ads in follow-up queries labeled as sponsored.
How AI Visibility Differs From Organic Rankings
AI answers can affect how users interact with search results.
Compare AI visibility with organic search performance as separate parts of an audit.
What Does This Mean for Organic Visibility?
Monitor rankings, impressions and clicks alongside AI visibility. Record AI citations separately from traditional rankings rather than treating both visibility signals as interchangeable.

How User Exposure Affects Traffic
Distinguish studies of exposure and attitudes from evidence about website traffic.
Avoid drawing conclusions about a particular site’s traffic or revenue without appropriate evidence.
What a Site Audit Can and Cannot Conclude
- Lower clicks with stable impressions: Check whether AI Overviews appeared for the affected queries, then compare ranking positions, result presentation and landing-page click-through.
- Lower clicks and declining impressions: Review ranking losses, index coverage, crawl problems, page availability and changes in search demand.
- Lower conversion rate: Compare landing-page traffic with leads, registrations, sales and other commercial outcomes.
- Incomplete referral attribution: Document how referrals are classified and which referrers are missing or grouped.
- Sudden technical failure: Check page availability, indexing, redirects, canonical tags and affected landing pages. Ask the developer or site operator for confirmed errors and their start dates.
- Revenue concern: Separate advertising impressions, subscription starts and conversion value by landing page.
How to Audit Your Site
- Establish a baseline. Record organic clicks, impressions, average positions, landing-page conversions and referral sources. Keep the definitions consistent for later comparisons.
- Group traffic by intent. Separate informational, commercial and transactional queries, then review the pages that produce the most business value.
- Compare clicks with impressions. Use query-level data to identify changes that warrant investigation.
- Check business outcomes. Compare clicks and conversions for each affected landing page, including leads, sales, subscriptions or another defined result.
- Review the evidence together. Bring query data, page performance, conversion records, referral reporting, AI visibility and technical checks into one dated review.
What to Do Now
- Create a dated baseline for organic clicks, impressions, positions, conversions, referral sources and AI citations.
- List the landing pages and commercial queries that contribute most to revenue, then group them by search intent.
- Compare clicks and impressions for each group. Record whether rankings, result presentation or technical availability changed at the same time.
- Review conversion rates and AI visibility for affected pages before attributing a decline to AI search or changing the content.
- Record referral gaps and confirmed technical issues so the next audit has a complete evidence trail.
